Changes to the adjusted taxable income test for Commonwealth Seniors Health Card

From 1 July 2009, there will be changes to how certain types of income affect eligibility for the CSHC. Depending on your circumstances, these changes may impact on your eligibility for a CSHC and you may be required to provide additional information about your income to Centrelink.

The adjusted taxable income test for CSHC will include:

• assessment of total net investment losses. Total net investment losses are the sum of net losses from rental property income and net losses from financial investment income, and
• subject to the passage of legislation, reportable superannuation contributions may be included in the adjusted taxable income test for CSHC. Reportable superannuation contributions are discretionary or voluntary contributions, for example salary sacrifice contribution and personal deductible contributions. 

Note: losses from rental properties are already included in assessable income for CSHC. From 1 July 2009, the adjustable taxable income test will also include losses from.

Mutiny up on gold discoveries at White Well

Shares in WA explorer Mutiny Gold shot higher today after the company said it had found five new gold mineralisation zones at its White Well project east of Cue.

Mutiny said the White Well project covered 6.5 km of the Tuckabianna mineral belt, which had a total estimated resource of one million ounces over a strike length of 48km.

The White Well resource is estimated at 113,000 ounces of gold, which the company expects to enhance through further drilling and exploration.

White Well was abandoned by Newcrest Mining in the late 1990s and was acquired by Mutiny in the middle of last year. 

Mutiny Gold managing director John Greeve said he was confident White Well was a vastly underdeveloped resource.

Mutiny Gold shares were up 1.8 cents, or 64.29 per cent, to 4.6 cents at noon on low volumes.

Budget 09: Skilled intake cut by 6900 people

THE federal Government has cut the skilled migration intake by a further 6900 people to help protect local jobs during the economic crisis.

But it will increase the number of people allowed to migrate to Australia for family reunions, the Government said yesterday as part of Budget 2009.

In March, the Government shed 18,500 skilled migration places in response to growing unemployment, which is forecast to hit 8.25 per cent in 2009-10.

The latest cut, the second to be made this year, brings the program down to 108,100 places in 2009-10.

Overall, the Government has slashed previous planning levels by close to 20 per cent.

Immigration Minister Chris Evans said the cuts would not be made to professions on the critical skills shortage list such as IT.

The migration intake in the coming year reflects the economic climate while ensuring employers can gain access to skilled professionals in industries still experiencing skills shortages,” Senator Evans said in a statement. The Government will provide more opportunities for family reunions by increasing the family component of the migration program by 3800 places to a total of 60,300 in 2009-10.

“This boost … will benefit Australians who seek to have their parents, partners or children join them to live here permanently,” Senator Evans said.

Overall, the migration program will total 168,700 for 2009-10.
