Australia’s first MasterChef winner

JULIE Goodwin has dedicated her victory in MasterChef Australia to her family after winning the final of the Channel 10 reality show.

Goodwin, 38, beat Adelaide’s Poh Ling Yeow after a gruelling series of challenges that tested both competitors to the maximum.

The New South Wales mother-of-three spent three months away from her husband Mich and sons Joe, 13, Tom, 12, and Paddy, 10, to take part in the TV show and says it was the hardest time of her life.

“Winning MasterChef Australia feels like such an achievement and means the time away from my family was worthwhile,” Julie said

Chris Badenoch out of MasterChef Final

CHRIS Badenoch’s elimination has left Poh and Julie to the final.                                                                                                                                                        

Poh, is lucky to be in the final after she was given a second chance and allowed back on the show two weeks ago.

Julie, mother-of-three who is also in the final  has consistently been in the bottom two and faced numerous pressure tests but has always managed to scrape through.

Badenoch had dismissed Julie’s chances of staying in the competition in a magazine article earlier this week. 

The final three had to impress guest judge Donna Hay with the three dishes they wanted to see in their first cookbook.

Badenoch’s dished up quail, beef cheeks with sherry, and pigs trotters cooked in beer.

“It’s hugely disappointing. Unfortunately some of my dishes didn’t live up to my usual standards,” he said

Badenoch was distraught to miss out on Sunday’s final.

Are you Australia’s next Apprentice ?

Channel Nine has announced an Australian version of The Apprentice will be made, to be fronted by Wizard Finance creator Mark Bouris.  

To be produced by FremantleMedia Australia, it’s a surprising move given the franchise is now several years old and hardly considered “hot property” anymore. It’s been some time since we’ve seen The Trump on free-to-air, and even Seven’s attempt at the UK Apprentice, with Alan Sugar, didn’t exactly light up our screens either.

So can a local version work? FremantleMedia at least has a good track record at Australian adaptations of international series, including MasterChef Australia, Australian Idol, The Biggest Loser and Project Runway Australia.

Nine also found that its local version of Ladette to Lady did quite nicely, thank you. But in this game there are no guarantees.  Neither Australian Survivor or Celebrity Survivor, which like this format are both Mark Burnett franchises, worked in Australia.

It will also be risky launching a show that has succeeded with its wealthy excess in a time of recession.  But most reality shows hinge on their casting. Mark Bouris is offering the winner of the local series an executive position in his financial-services firm company, Yellow Brick Road on a cool six-figure salary.

To be part of my team you will need to understand the concept that everyone has financial dreams, and that this is something that all Australians are entitled to, he says. “In many cases owning your own home and a comfortable retirement is ultimately what people want. For me empathy is really important and I’m not interested in an apprentice who only wants to look after the top end of the financial spectrum.  Being in my team means that you will want to help both.”

Masterchef Australia

George Calombaris has been awarded more accolades for his work than most receive in a lifetime, and this exuberant chef is still just 30 years of age.
